'No Sympathy For Him': Calcutta HC Denies Urgent Listing of Shajahan Sheikh's Bail Plea Hearing

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday declined a request from TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, accused of alleged sexual atrocities and land grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, for an urgent hearing into his bail plea. The court told Shajahan’s counsel, who appeared on behalf of the Trinamool Congress leader, to come back on Monday with the request.

Sheikh, accused of alleged sexual atrocities and land grabbing in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, was arrested on Thursday morning after being on the run for 55 days. He was sent to 10 days in police custody by a court in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district after his arrest from Minakhan in the early hours.

Hours after his arrest, Sheikh appeared before the Calcutta High Court through his advocate requesting an urgent hearing of his bail plea.

The counsel said that Sheikh was arrested despite his plea for anticipatory bail having just been disposed of. He further noted that several cases against the TMC leader were still pending before trial courts and emphasized the urgent nature of the plea.

He requested that Sheikh’s application for regular bail be listed as an urgent motion.

To this, the court remarked it has ‘no sympathy’ for Sheikh and asked his lawyer to come back with the plea on Monday.

“Let him be arrested. For the next 10 years, this person will keep you very busy. You won’t have any time for any other brief. 42 cases have been registered against him, he has been absconding as well. You come on Monday. Anything you want you come on Monday, we have got no sympathy for that person,” the court said.

Shahjahan was arrested after a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, made it amply clear that any investigating agency, whether under the state or Union government, was empowered to take him into custody.

The court had directed the state police to arrest him on Monday.
