MYSORE: The house from where R K Narayan created the fictional city of Malgudi in his novels could have always been remembered with pride for Mysoreans. But not anymore. For the residence of Narayan, one of India’s greatest English novelists, in Yadavagiri is being demolished to make way for an apartment building. Taking note of this, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raikar on Monday said all demolition work on the house must be stopped immediately. Raikar told Express that the matter will be referred to the Heritages Department and an assessment will be done as to whether the house can be added under the department norms. “A report will be prepared on September 6,” he said. Town Planning Joint Director, Mysore City Corporation, Chowdegowda said, “This is not about the building, but about preserving Narayan’s history.” After Narayan’s death on May 13, 2001, in Chennai at the age of 94, the house was lying vacant and the then Governor T N  Chaturvedi had proposed to make it a memorial. But, the Governor got transferred and the proposal died a natural death. Narayan’s heirs, granddaughter Minni (in Chennai) and grandson Srinivasan (in US) had sold the property to a builder, who had begun the demolition work on Monday morning.
