TN cops shown Vijayakanth movie clips to boost force's image and teach them how to deal with people and criminals.

Madurai: Policemen in Tamil Nadu are being shown clips from the movies of popular star Vijayakanth as part of an exercise to boost the force's image and to teach

them how to deal with the people and take on criminals.

At a training camp organised by the police department at Virudhunagar, 55 km from Madurai, clips from Vijayakanth's movies were shown to policemen "to explain what is the right body language", said an official.

According to the policemen undergoing the training, clips from actor Surya's movies were also shown.

The clips were recorded on CDs and shown on big screens, they said.

The scenes focussed on how the actors dealt with criminals and created panic among criminals, and also how they tackled the people's problems.

The policemen were advised to be fit and trim and to keep themselves neat and tidy. They were also given training on ethics and morality, and were told about the need to win the goodwill of the people.

Many trainees, however, wondered why Vijayakanth, an MLA and leader of the Desiya Muropokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), was shown as a role model instead of Additional Director General of Police Vijayakumar, who was behind the operation that led to the gunning down of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, or Inspector General Jangid, Chennai's Additional Commissioner of Police, or even other military personnel.

A top police official said the objective of the training was to build the police image. "Using film shots is incidental," he said.
