CHENNAI: A documentary film screening, a Villupaatu performance, a one-act play and a lot of anecdotes by veteran actors and other known personalities marked the 54th death anniversary of yesteryear comedian/actor Kalaivanar, as NS Krishnan was popularly known. Organised by the Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram that comes under the Ministry of Art and Culture, Govt of Tamil Nadu, the evening witnessed people recollecting their glorious days with the veteran, who was instrumental in the transformation of Tamil cinema.The event kick-started with a documentary film titled, NS Krishnan and Madhuram, that had scenes from his movies and bytes of former CM Annadurai, actors Vivek and Manorama and many other people. The movie scenes were well received by the audiences. It was followed by a Villupaatu performance by popular artiste Subbhu Arumugam and his troupe. He recalled how NSK was careful that his humour did not hurt anyone. He said that NSK is the second person, whose picture came on the Kalki magazine’s cover page after Jawaharlal Nehru. He recollected former CM Annadurai’s response after hearing about NSK’s demise — “If there is a technology to bring NSK back by sacrificing one’s own life, there will be a queue up to Tambaram and I’ll be the first person in the queue,” he said. Subbhu Arumugam also said NSK was given the title ‘Thamizh Periyar’ even before EV Ramasamy was given Thandhai Periyar title. He appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to have a University named after NSK.Veteran actor Kaka Radhakrishnan also recalled how he made up a play, Chandra Giri, just by giving reversed shade to the original play, Harichandran. Actress Sachu, member-secretary of Iyal, Isai Nataka Mandram, reminisced her young age when she got the opportunity to work with NS Krishnan. She said he created a character for her in the movie Raja Desingh after she requested him. Music director Deva and Art and Culture minister, SP Shanmuganathan also spoke at the event.
