TIRUNELVELI: Officials from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs conducted an inspection at People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) coordinator S P Udayakumar’s South Asian Community Centre for Education and Research (SACCER) office at Nagercoil on Thursday. The officials, who arrived in the morning at Udayakumar’s family-owned house at Parakai Road, then went to the SACCER trust office located on the house premises and conducted an inspection. Following this, they inspected a travellers’ bungalow at Nagercoil, where Udayakumar’s wife Meera Udayakumar and their auditor were present. Meanwhile, Udayakumar, who was at Idinthakarai, said that his wife Meera and mother S Ponmani were the trustees of SACCER trust, which has been managing the SACCER Matriculation School near Nagercoil since 2003. In 2007, the WATUMULL Foundation in USA, run by an Indian family known to them, sent `4.35 lakh for purchasing a school van, the PMANE leader said. As the transaction involved foreign funds, prior permission was obtained from the Home Ministry and a separate account was opened with the SBI head office at Nagercoil. Udayakumar pointed out, and added that in 2007 itself, he handed over the documents pertaining to the transaction as requested by the MHA. But, two months back, the Home Ministry sent him a letter comprising a questionnaire on whether he received funds from abroad. One month ago, I furnished an explanation to the MHA, he said.
