Paris: Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy began their title defence with a hard-fought 6-3 6-7(8) 7-5 win over Swede Johan Brunstrom and Jean-Julien Rojer of Netherlands Antilles in the opening round of the French Open men's doubles event.

The third seeded Indo-Czech pair had to toil hard for two hours and 16 minutes to see off the challenge of their unseeded rivals in the first round of the clay court Grand Slam here on Thursday.

They will next take on winners of the first round match between the pairs of Philipp Marx/Igor Zelenay and Yves Allegro/Andreas Beck.

Mahesh Bhupathi and his Belarussian partner Max Mirnyi, seeded fifth, have already sailed into the second round.

Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi are yet to start their campaign.

They are up against Fabio Fognini of Italy and Michael Russell of the United States.
