KOCHI: Slamming the central leadership of CPM and CPI for turning their backs on the Mullaperiyar issue, Kerala Congress(B) Chairman R Balakrishna Pillai on Monday said that the central units of the two parties were with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa whereas the state units were supporting the respective states on the issue. “CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and CPI general secretary A B Baradhan have asked their party workers to avoid protests till the Supreme Court decision comes. Meanwhile, the CPM leaders in Kerala are pitching for a new dam and carrying out agitations,” he said.Inaugurating the party district level meeting here, Pillai asked the CPM and the CPI leaders to stage protests in front of the Tamil Nadu secretariat against Jayalalithaa rather than fasting at Chappath in Idukki. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Jayalalithaa have constitutional liabilities to ensure the safety of about 35 lakh people. Tamil Nadu CM has no right to act against the Kerala Government’s decision to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar, he said. On Tamil Nadu using Advocate General K P Dandapani’s remarks in the HC on Mullaperiyar issue to target the state, Pillai said if Jayalalithaa said that AG was right, then there should be something more on it. Dandapani had remarked that the water level in the dam and the safety were not connected.Pillai further said that no power project had been implemented in the state after 1987.
