CHENNAI: The Confederation of Surface Transport Tamil Nadu on Monday appealed to the Chennai City Police to withdraw the restriction on light motor vehicles from using eight arterial roads during peak hours and allow them to transport essential commodities throughout the day. The restriction came in to effect from Monday.“Already heavy vehicles had been banned from using the city roads during day time. We have been transporting essential commodities using vans. Now, after the restriction, we have only three hours in the afternoon for transporting and godowns close for lunch during that time. Hence, we will lose business. We appeal the police for a relaxation in the restriction and allow us to transport through the day,” said R Sugumar, president, Confederation of Surface Transport Tamil Nadu.In a press meet, the confederation had also put forth other demands including removal of spot fine by traffic police and levying them through concerned police stations; to allow trailer lorries to park in open government land allotted for parking along the Chennai port-Manali and Madhavaram- Manali stretch, as they are cause traffic congestion; and to bring a solution to the excessive entry fee at the Koyembedu market. The confederation said they would not load anything at the market from April 15 if their demands are not met.
