PM Modi Pays Tribute to Martyrs of 1971 War
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes on Vijay Diwas to soldiers who died during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes on Vijay Diwas to soldiers who died during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

"Vijay Diwas is a fitting reminder of the valour and sacrifice of all those who fought courageously in the 1971 war. Tributes to them," Modi said in a tweet.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh, Naval Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, also paid homage to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti on the occassion of 'Vijay Diwas'.

Lt. General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the then Eastern Command chief of the Pakistani forces, along with 93,000 troops surrendered unconditionally after conceding defeat India's Lt. General Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dacca (now Dhaka) on December 16, 1971.

It resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh.
