BANGALORE: While students from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) look forward to do their summer internships at leading companies globally, one student opted to intern with a political party. Kundan Mal Verma, a first year student of post graduate programme in Management Studies at IIM-B, will do his summer internship with Janata Dal (United) party.Hailing from Bikaner in Rajasthan, Kundan does not lay claim to any political background and says his father runs a grocery shop. His undergraduate choice of study is Agriculture, giving no hint on his interests in politics. “With this opportunity, I’ll get to see the working of a political party closely,” he said. It’s not easy to land an internship with a political party. “Some three months back, I searched for the JD(U) website and sent an e-mail to the party. I received a reply a few days later. After exchanging several mails, I was directed to meet JD(U) president M P Nadagouda. They finally agreed on giving me the internship, which I will do in April and May,” he says.Answering the next obvious question, why JD (U), he admits that it was his fascination with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar that attracted him to the party. “It is amazing how he changed the image of Bihar in a span of eight years and even managed to enhance the GDP of the state,” he says. This does not come as a surprise as several B-schools in the country discuss a case study of transformation of Railways, credit to which often goes to Minister Nitish Kumar. Kundan does not fail to thank his teaching faculty members who encouraged him to choose a different sector for his internship. So, will he repent not choosing a multi-national company for his internship, for often these internships extend into job offers. He says no, for this internship is a dream come true for him.
