New Delhi: There is a reason why Ranveer Singh's energy is talked and discussed in the film industry. At the recent press conference in Delhi, while promoting his upcoming film 'Lootera, Ranveer did all kinds of antics which left everyone present quite amused.
From flirting (strictly harmless) with female journalists, to appearing besotted by his leading lady Sonakshi Sinha to even enacting the incident where Sonakshi staged a walk out during the shooting of the film, Ranveer's energy and enthusiasm was almost infectious to all who were present in the room.
So, was it difficult for a man with so much energy to be in a film which is all about subtle moments? "It was difficult to play a character so subtle," admits Singh candidly. "But that was the challenge, and I totally loved it." Is it true that he almost rejected the film initially? "No, not true at all. I wanted to work with Vikramaditya Motwane(the film's director) ever since I watched 'Udaan'. So loved the fact that he cast me in 'Lootera'. It was just that on the third day of our workshop, I just couldn't get the character and felt scared that I won't be able to perform and sort of gave up. But Vikramaditya calmed me down and sat and explained Varun's character well."
Ranveer who is playing archaeologist Varun Srivastav in the film, says that contrary to popular belief, only a small portion of 'Lootera' is based on O Henry's classic story, 'The Last Leaf. "90 percent of the screenplay is original, only a bit has been taken from O Henry's story." Playing a character with negative shades in 'Lootera', the actor also admitted that its more fun to play the bad guy on screen.
Ranveer made his debut in YRF's 'Band Baaja Baarat' in 2010 and calls Aditya Chopra his godfather in the film industry. Was their apprehension in doing a film with a not so commercial director like Motwane? "Its Vikramaditya Motwane we are talking about. He just can't go wrong," said Ranveer confidently.
The actor, who is rumoured to be dating his 'Ram Leela' co star Deepika Padukone, insisted he is "single". And what about the news that Sonakshi's mom was present at all times on the sets thanks to Ranveer's flirtatious image? "Oh please! Poonam Aunty came one day and treated us to amazing Sindhi curry. But no, she wasn't there all days. It's not what you think! Poonam Aunty wasn't present during the filming of the intimate scene. Only Sonakshi, Vikramaditya, the DOP and I were there during the filming of that scene."
The actor who has some interesting films lined up in the coming months- 'Ram Leela', 'Gunday' and 'Kill Dil'- says he came out of his comfort zone for 'Lootera' and is happy that the film is being appreciated. "I am aware that people have a certain perception about me. But no one really knows the real me. I don't like the tags that are attached to people, but I don't bother much about them. It feels good to be appreciated for your work so I am glad that I did 'Lootera'."
