HYDERABAD: The power loom sector, which is concentrated in the Telangana region, is among the sectors hit hard by the massive power cuts imposed following a sharp fall in power generation in the state owing to the ongoing Sakala Janula Samme. With production schedules going haywire due to power supply being restricted to four to five hours a day, a majority of the power loom operators lament that they are not in a position to deliver even 50 percent of the orders on hand for the Dasara-Deepavali festival season. It’s not only the financial loss that they are worried about, but also the prospect of losing the confidence of customers. There are about 60,000 power looms in the state, 42,000 of them being in Telangana region.Sircilla in Karimnagar district accounts for about 25,000 of them while Nalgonda district has 8,000 power looms. Thousands of families depend on these looms for livelihood.Says Miryala Yadagiri, president of Nalgonda district power looms association, “We have been getting only four to five hours of supply per day for the last 10 days while our daily work schedule stretches to 12 hours - from 7am to 7 pm.” Yadagiri, who runs 100 looms, normally produces about 2,000 metres of cloth every day when there is no disruption in power supply. But now his production has dropped below 1,000 meters a day. With unfinished orders holding up the expected payments from customers, the large number of workers engaged in powerloom production have given up hopes on Dasara festivities.
