HYDERABAD: Amid blowing of conch shells and chants of vedic hymns, devotees thronged Lord Krishna temples across the country to celebrate Janmashtami with a traditional gaiety.  Colourful decorations, special prayers and cultural programmes at brightly adorned temples in various parts of the city Monday marked the Janmashtami celebrations. With priests at the temples reciting Sanskrit verses and text of Bhagavad Gita, and people chanting devotional songs thronged the temples in various localities on Janmashtami - celebrated to mark birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most loved Hindu deities. The main Janmashtami celebrations in the city took place at the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, Banjara Hills, Sri Shyam Mandir in Kachiguda and at the ISKCON temple in Nampally. The ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) at Nampally was decked up in all splendour for celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna Devotees started pouring in from early morning to catch a glimpse of Lord Krishna, who was decorated in beautiful attires. The president of ISKCON, Swami Vedanta Chaitanya Prabhu, gave a discourse on the birth of Lord Krishna and explained the tradition of celebrating Janmashtami. There were other discourses on spirituality and rituality.Many people sang bhajans and hymns in the praise of the Lord Krishna. There were four aartis that went on through the day, which included the Mangal aarti early in the morning, which was followed by the shringar aarti at 7.30am, then the Raj Bhog aarti was held at noon, and was concluded by another Mangal aarti in the evening.  Many school children volunteered for organising the processions and  managing the crowd.
