Prez poll: PM wants NDA's support
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is pushing for a consensus on the Presidential candidate.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought a consensus over UPA candidate for the top post reminding the NDA that the Congress had backed its candidate A P J Abdul Kalam five years ago.

He said that the NDA should back the UPA candidate for the post of president. Last time when Kalam was nominated by NDA, Congress had accepted him.

Speaking to reporters while returning from the G8 summit, Singh said it's time for the NDA to reciprocate the Congress's support for President Kalam.

"I hope this time the NDA would endorse the candidate who is suggested by the UPA and Left allies," he addressed media while returning to India from Germany.

“There should be a consensus in favour of a President who is the nominee of the UPA and Left parties,” Singh added.

Singh skirted a question on whether Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee or Shivraj Patil would make it to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"The next President will be a nominee of the UPA-Left parties. As to who that person will be, discussions are still going on.

The process of consultations are still not complete. When it is through and a decision is taken, we will tell you," he said.
