The residents of the Keezhmadu panchayat on Friday staged a protest march against the waste disposal on nearly one-acre of paddy field, under the aegis of a Samyukta Samara Samity led by ward member T P Azees. They also staged a dharna in front of the panchayat office. The march was inaugurated by environmentalist S Sitaram.
They alleged that the waste from the slaughterhouse in Aluva and other waste were dumped in Ward 8 leaving the place stinking. The residents were unaware of it as the culprits dumped the waste past midnight and in the wee hours of Friday.
“Usually trucks carry cement from the nearby cement factory and we did not realise that the trucks were transporting waste until the whole place began to stink and flies and worms began to spread,” said Eldo, a resident. The emergency committee meeting of the panchayat decided to get the waste removed at the earliest.
