Jalandhar: A Congress leader in Punjab has been arrested for allegedly abducting and raping a 17-year-old girl.

PPCC secretary Manoj Sondhi was arrested along with the alleged victim from Ludhiana on Wednesday, police said.

The girl's father, a resident of Preet Nagar, had lodged a complaint against Sondhi on May 16, accusing him of abducting his daughter.

Sondhi, a family friend, is suspected to have lured the girl during his visits to the house. The girl, on May 13, had gone to the market but did not return home. However, during investigation, it was found Sondhi had taken the girl in his vehicle, police said.

The two were found in a rented house at Qilla Mohalla area in Ludhiana.

When police raided the room, Sondhi claimed he had married the girl in a temple after divorcing his wife.

However, the girl said she was lured and accused him of developing physical relations with her. She was put to medical tests and her statement recorded before a magistrate.
