A magnitude five earthquake rocked Wellington early on Tuesday morning. However, there were no reports of any casualties.

Wellington: An earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale jolted Wellington early on Tuesday morning, New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

The quake, whose epicentre on North Island was about 140 kilometers northeast of New Zealand's capital, was felt as a slow, rocking motion just before 1930 hrs IST (0300 hrs local time).

New Zealand experiences around 14,000 quakes each year but most are too light or too deep to be widely felt.
