THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSEB former chairman K Ramabhadran Nair, the sixth accused in the Edamalayar graft case, died of a massive heart attack  on Sunday morning at his house at Panicker’s lane at Sastamangalam here. He was 81. Ramabhadran Nair, who was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment along with former minister R Balakrishna Pillai in the Edamalayar case, had been bedridden for more than two years and he was in an advanced stage of dementia.After the Supreme Court had sentenced Ramabhadran Nair to one year rigorous imprisonment, police officials who arrived at his house to implement the court order found that he was in very poor physical health.  His condition had deteriorated over the years due to the prolonged illness. Later, a team of medical experts was deputed to submit a report on his physical condition. Based on the medical report, the Supreme Court reduced his sentence to the period already undergone at the trial stage, though it did not absolve him from the case. The prosecution case against Nair was that he was part of a criminal conspiracy which caused a loss of  Rs 2 crore to KSEB in the process of  awarding contracts for constructing a power tunnel and a surge shaft for the Edamalayar project. An alumnus of College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram, he was the chairman of the KSEB from 1982 to 1985 and had also served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE). He is survived by wife Maya and children Sunil R Nair and Dr Anoop R Nair.  His elder son Satheesh R Nair had died earlier. The cremation of Ramabhadran Nair was held at the Thycaud crematorium here.
