IRITTY(KANNUR): The members of the gang involved in the rape of a teenage girl from West Bengal here were arrested and remanded in fourteen days custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Mattanur, on Tuesday. Those remanded in custody are Jankai Biju, 37, of Ulikkal, N I Jamshir, 22, of Ulikkal Manippara, Kannoth Muhammed Sherief, 27, of Wayanad and Kombanaparambil Muhammed Shalief, 22 of Ulikkal. The mini lorry in which the accused were travelling and a motorbike were also produced before the court on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the victim of the gang-rape, who is undergoing treatment at the District Hospital here, is yet to regain consciousness. The service of a psychiatrist is being utilised to help the girl regain her normal state of mind, according to police sources.The teenage girl from West Bengal, who reached Iritty in search of her lover, was raped by a gang of four who offered her a lift in a mini-lorry. The girl was raped by the gang after a relative and a native who accompanied her were badly beaten up and tied to the mini-lorry. The girl is a native of Murshidabad in West Bengal. She was abandoned in a desolate area by her tormentors.Political parties and various women’s organisations had demanded stern action against the culprits involved in the rape of the hapless girl. At the same time, the police received a lot of kudos from the public for taking immediate action to trace the culprits and arrest them. It was the timely action of a police party led by Circle Inspector V V Manoj, SIs K Chandhu and Usha Devi that led to the arrest of the culprits. Iritty DySP M Pradeep Kumar led the entire operation.
