Relative arrested in NIA officer murder case, personal enmity suspected
The arrested person was upset over a property deal commission commitment not honoured by the NIA officer, said sources.

Uttar Pradesh Police have made the first arrest in the murder case of Mohd Tanzil Ahmed, the NIA officer who was gunned down in front of his family last week.

Sources said the arrested suspect is a relative of the NIA officer, and that the murder was because the officer went back on his promise to pay commission over a property deal.

The murder was planned by the arrested man and executed with the help of a hitman, said sources, adding that the arrest was made with the help of local intelligence. Police are hopeful of a second arrest in connection with the case soon.

This comes after sources in the NIA claimed that a terror or a political angle was unlikely behind the murder.

While the Uttar Pradesh Police had earlier suspected that the two attackers were seen in the video which it had accessed from a wedding that the officer attended, sources later denied the possibility.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Javeed Ahmad had said two weapons were used to attack the NIA officer including a 9 mm pistol which is a banned firearm. "A .32 bore weapon and a 9 mm pistol were used by the assailants," he said.

The incident had taken place when Ahmed, earlier posted as an assistant commandant in BSF and on deputation to NIA, was returning to his home in Sahaspur village of Bijnor district with his family after attending his niece's wedding in a nearby village in the same district. Bijnor is about 150 kms from Delhi.
