COIMBATORE: Ravanan, a relative of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s former aide Sasikala Natarajan, along with his personal assistant Mohan were arrested on Friday for allegedly extorting Rs 10 lakh from a Coimbatore-based contractor in October last year.“Ravanan and Mohan were arrested from the former’s residence in Ramanathapuram (Coimbatore) this afternoon,” Coimbatore Superintendent of Police E S Uma said dismissing speculative reports that the two were arrested in Chennai on Thursday night.Until his expulsion from the AIADMK along with the rest of the Sasikala clan last month, Ravanan had wielded enormous influence in Coimbatore by abusing Sasikala’s proximity to the Chief Minister. Even senior officials and ministers from the region regularly called on him at his residence. Explaining the delay between the time of occurrence of the crime and the arrest, a police press release said: “After the expulsion of Ravanan from the AIADMK, the complainant has mustered courage and given the complaint. Following the receipt of the complaint a case was registered in DCB Cr.No: 3/12 u/s 449,364A,342,386,506(2) r/w 120 B IPC and the case is under investigation.”According to the release, the contractor Ravikumar, of Kitchagathiyur near Sirumugai, had on Thursday submitted a complaint to the Coimbatore SP accusing Ravanan and Mohan of extorting `10 lakh from him through abduction and criminal intimidation.
