Rescue operations in Uttarakhand are over, state government tells SC

New Delhi: The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that rescue operations in the state are now over. The Supreme Court has now asked the Uttarakhand government to file an affidavit in this regard by July 10.

On Tuesday, all pilgrims in Badrinath were finally evacuated in what is being termed as the biggest air rescue operation conducted by the Air Force. The focus now shifts to rehabilitating the locals and rebuilding the state.

NDMA Vice-Chairman Shashidhar Reddy had said on Tuesday that over 11,000 people are still feared to be missing in the flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand. Reddy said as per the official data, the count of missing people has reached only upto 3,500 to 3,700 but more than 11,000 people are feared to be missing in the state.

According to the NDMA's recent data, rains and floods had affected 4,200 villages in Uttarakhand besides damaging 2,397 houses and 194 bridges.
