The state government has prepared a Rs 1,100 crore action plan to develop new roads in all local urban bodies, excluding city corporations, said Municipal  Administration Minister Balachandra Jarkiholi here on Friday.

The plan aims to develop over 4,500 kms roads.  Addressing a press conference after holding a review meeting with Commissioners of both City Municipal Councils, Chief Officers of Town Municipal Councils and the Development Officers of Town Panchayats, the Minister said that an amount of `20 lakh per kilometre would be spent in the proposed new road works, which would be identified by a committee headed by the respective District In-charge Ministers.

According to him, the process to float tender for the new road works has already been initiated and it would be completed in September. He added that the the process of awarding the contract would be completed in October. “The actual works would commence from November and are expected to be completed by February 2013” said Jarkiholi.

To ensure that a committee headed by District In-charge Ministers would not only monitor the execution of quality road works, he said that there are plans to go for third party inspection to ensure the quality.

In the meeting, Jarkiholi took a stock of drinking water situation in urban local bodies.Stating that the urban local bodies may face difficulties if the south-west monsoon continued to plays truant, the Minister said that to ward off the situation the state government has released about `74 crore.
