The Assembly on Wednesday passed a Bill that makes one year rural service mandatory for all MBBS and post graduate doctors in the state.
The Bill known as the Karnataka Compulsory Training by Candidates Completed Medical Courses Bill was passed unanimously in the Assembly after it was piloted by medical education minister S A Ramdas. The doctors who do not comply with the provision of the Act will not be given permanent registration to carry on with their profession in the state besides imposing hefty fine against them.
While MBBS doctors will be fined Rs 15 lakh for not serving in rural areas, the PG diploma and PG doctors will be fined Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh respectively.The government will give give a monthly stipend of Rs 29,967 to MBBS doctors and Rs 29,967 to PG doctors which is Rs 100 less than what regular government doctors are drawing. Dr RS Raju of Family Physicians Association of Bangalore welcomed the move. However, he was concern about the lack of infrastructure in rural hospitals.
