HYDERABAD: A day after her former colleague’s son died in a horrific car crash on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy announced a slew of familiar measures to make the speedway safer. The death of Komatireddy Venkata Reddy’s son Prateek and two of his friends in a Skoda on Tuesday spurred the government into regurgitating the measures it had promised when another VIP Md Azharuddin’s son Ayazuddin, drove to his death on a motorcycle on this freeway a couple of months ago.At a high-level meeting called by the home minister at the Secretariat, it was decided to step up up patrolling on the ORR to rein in speed freaks. Briefing the media, Sabitha Reddy said 10 vehicles will be pressed to patrol the ORR, each manned by an SI, a head constable and two constables. It was also decided to set up one staffed post every 25 km on the speedway. The patrols will be equipped with speedguns, breathlysers and the works to curb drunk driving. These measures mirror the steps proposed to make the state’s highways safer. Proposals have been sent to the government to set up 63 outposts on the 4,000 or so km of national highways passing through the state -- one at every 100 km, each manned by an SI, a head constable and 2 constables. As many as 13,853 persons have died in 39,000 accidents on these highways in the state from January to November this year. The meeting also discussed proposals worth about `25 crore to solve the traffic problems of Hyderabad. Of this `3 crore will be spent on making the ORR safer.
