Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday emphasised why road safety awareness is essential and urged people to help those in need during an event of an accident.

Speaking at the 2024 edition of ‘Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan’, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister said efforts are being made to raise road safety awareness, and change is happening in society.

“We should always help people who have been in an accident. If we don’t help others, no one will help us…I have always believed where there is a will there is a way. I like people who get things done,” he said.

The Minister recalled that in 2004, he was involved in a road accident while on his way to Nagpur. Gadkari said he suffered serious injuries in the accident and it left a profound impact on his life.

“Life is precious, and safeguarding lives is most important,” he said urging people to come forward and help people involved in road accidents.

“If people will respect and follow the law, people’s behaviour will gradually change. This is how a society changes,” he added.

‘Sadak Suraksha Abhiyaan’ is a public service awareness campaign, in association with the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highway and Save Life Foundation, to raise awareness around road safety and reduce the number of preventable accidents.

The campaign, which is back with its second season, aims to evoke responsibility amongst the masses and encourage citizens to demonstrate responsible behaviour on the roads.
