KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation authorities should open their eyes and try to understand the predicament of those evicted from both the sides of the Perandoor canal, said noted writer Sarah Joseph. After visiting the Libra Hotel, where the evictees are provided temporary shelter, she said the civic administrators' apathy has delayed the proper rehabilitation of the evictees. It was in 2007 that the Corporation had evicted 36 families from the sides of the Perandoor canal. So far the civic body has rehabilitated 12 families at Munadamveli. Five families have moved to Thevara on their own. The remaining 19 families are still staying at the Libra Hotel. Sarah Joseph, who visited the hotel along with human rights activists, interacted with the evictees. "How many days more will they have to suffer here in the congested rooms. I hope the civic body will soon address their grievances," she said.Sarah Jospeh also urged the residents to launch agitations if the Corporation would not find a solution to the issue soon.
