BHUBANESWAR: The Bharatiya Janata Kishan Morcha, BJP’s farmers’ wing, will organise a ‘save farmers’ rally here on December 5 to protest the alleged anti-farmer policy of the State Government. The Morcha will take out a three-day padayatra from Puri to Bhubaneswar beginning December 3. The padayatra will culminate in the ‘save farmers’ rally  here. National president of the Morcha OP Dhankar will inaugurate the padayatra. Public meetings will be organised at Puri, Sakshigopal, Pipli and here, said Morcha’s State unit president Maheswar Sahu.  While recurring natural calamities have caused extensive damage to kharif crops, the State Government has failed to protect the interest of farmers. The State has the potential to provide irrigation to about 80 per cent of the cultivable land, but the Government has been able to cover only 28 per cent land, the Morcha said. Drought and flood are two recurring features of the State. The Government is yet to find a permanent solution to the twin problems, the Morcha said. The Morcha will highlight the farmers’ problems during the padayatra. Even as more than 250 farmers committed suicide during the last two years, mostly due to crop loss and loan burden, the Government has done nothing to arrest the problem, it alleged. The Morcha will submit memoranda to the President, the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister demanding creation of a farmers’ welfare fund in the State.
