SC Judge favours death for brutal crimes

CHENNAI: At a time when there are furious protests against capital punishment in the State, Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju has said that people involved in barbaric crimes like honour killing, deaths in dowry cases and fake encounters should be awarded capital punishment in order to reduce the crime rate.Delivering a special lecture on the topic, ‘Role of the Judiciary in the Present Scenario’ organized by ‘The Kasturi Srinivasan Library’, here on Saturday, he said: “At present, our country is going through a transition period in judicial matters. In Western countries, both the constitutions as well as societies are looking forward, whereas in India, the constitution is looking forward but the society is backward.”
