New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a petition filed against Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, seeking investigation into huge expenditure made on his daughter Chanda's marriage on April 30.
Justice K G Bala Krishnan, who was hearing the petition filed by the Ashoka Hotel Mazdoor Janata Union, declared the petition 'dismissed as withdrawn'.
On August 7, the apex court had directed the petitioners to file original documents within a week in connection with the alleged cash payment of Rs 21 lakh by Lalu.
According to the petitioners, the Ashoka Hotel Mazdoor Janata Union and S S Upadhayay, President of the Union, around 5,000 guests, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress party president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Cabinet Ministers, MPs, and bureaucrats, among others had attended the marriage function.
According to the hotel rules, the entire amount has to be deposited at least two days in advance but in the case of Lalu, no advance payment was made.
The petitioner had alleged that about Rs 21 lakh was paid on May 4 in cash and even the identities of persons who had deposited the amount were not maintained or verified by the hotel management.
