See divinity in your soul
Different postures, breathing techniques, chants and meditation help us link ourselves to the divinity in us. Rites and rituals are woven to create reverence

My dear friend, welcome back from your retreat of communion with nature. You have now fully rejuvenated yourself by synchronising your vibrations with all the five basic elements of nature. You have made certain attitudinal changes and have begun offering your gratitude to elements which are the building blocks of your body and the cosmos.

You have harmonised and balanced the energy of the earth and water elements in yourself by meditating under various trees, on the lawn, near rocks, hills and water. You have practised breathing techniques in all these beautiful natural settings to activate the elements of air and ether. You have gazed at the steady flame of a lamp to balance the element of fire in yourself. Maintain your connectivity with the forces of nature by practising special techniques during weekends or more frequently if your schedule permits you.

These last 10 days have given you a sense of reverence and gratitude for all the forces of nature that are constantly nurturing and protecting you. This sense of reverence is extremely precious because it sharpens your focus and increases your receptivity. Even when you were out in the wide open spaces under the sky, you harnessed the forces of nature by focusing reverently upon them one by one. Your mind, intellect and senses are most receptive when you operate this way. They feel overwhelmed, disoriented and disconnected when you flood them with too many inputs, ideas or information at one time. Your mind and senses require a physical form to connect to and focus upon. That is why, instead of sitting in your own room and simply visualising a rock, tree or lake, you went there physically to connect yourself with them. This gave an exhilarating dimension of reality and focus to your experience which you could never have obtained otherwise.

In a different fashion, most of us are unable to connect ourselves to the pure infinite cosmic consciousness that is the very source of this cosmos. Though this boundless energy is pulsating in every atom of creation, the very concept of this cosmic force which cannot be defined through any form or quality is too abstract, subtle and mind boggling for us to grasp. Knowing this shortcoming of the human mind, our seers and sages who were adept in the science of the soul, prayed to the cosmic force for a solution to this problem. In response to their prayer, several divine forms, symbols, qualities and vibrational frequencies called mantras or chants were revealed to them when they were in a state of deep meditation. The sages then established and consecrated these subtle forms and symbols in the physical world so that we could connect ourselves to the cosmic force or god by focusing on him. However, it was still very difficult for the human mind and senses to focus on these forms and symbols with complete concentration for prolonged periods of time.

Therefore, various rites and rituals were woven around these forms and symbols to inculcate a sense of reverence in us through external worship. These rites, rituals or methods of prayer are extremely effective in involving the body, mind and senses in activities that maintain our focus on divinity. They are also interspersed with different postures, breathing techniques, chants and meditation that help us link ourselves to the divinity present in us as the soul. These are common characteristics in the rituals and prayers of every religion or faith.
