Serenading Chennai, KK hits the right note
Serenading Chennai, KK hits the right note
The concert had more slow numbers that tugged at our heartstrings than pacy ones that the audience hoped for; KKs crooning was nothing short of magical

Soulful rendition and smooth notes are expected at all KK concerts. And add goosebumps, at some point.

He may have made his Chennai fans wait for an hour before he made his appearance on stage, but heck,  it was a sold out concert much ahead of starting time. Organised by the Madras Esplanade Ladies Circle 100 and the Madras Esplanade Round Table 30 at Sri Mutha Venkatasubba Rao concert hall, in aid of charity, the evening lived up to all the hype.

Upping the anticipation was singer Sangeeta Kopalkar who set the tone for the concert. Her yesteryear item number Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja, set to a shimmery matching lycra tights did have people entertained for a little while.

Not to forget a grey-haired audience member who bravely volunteered to sing the title line repeatedly, and even join Sangeetha with a few hip shakes. However, after a few songs, the crowd grew restless for KK. And he took his time, but certainly didn’t disappoint. With the opening lines of Tu Ashiki Hai (Jhankar Beats) at 8.30pm, the show had finally begun.

Keeping the pace slow and tugging at heart strings across the auditorium, he wooed fans all over again with songs that have made him a household name today — like Yaaron Dosti (Rockford), Tuhi Mere Shab Hai (Gangster — A Love Story) and a faster and much enjoyed Oh Hum Dum Suniyo Re (Saathiye). That last one got a few shrieks from the audience with a few people in row corners, dancing unabashedly in their seats. Looking dapper in his felt black blazer and faded denims, KK said, “I’ve come to Chennai after a long time. This is special for me, I’ve got a lot of friends here.”

It was a memorable a trip down Bollywood lane. Maybe the only let down was that the pace of the evening constantly fluctuated between the fast and  the slow. So momentum proved a tricky. At one point, the crowd called out, ‘More fast songs!’ But the singer worked his charm and quickly appeased fans by saying, “Hey, I’ve got to please the ladies.”

Nobody complained when an ever classic ultra slow Pyaar Ke Pal was sung. Instead, cell phone lights lit up the entire balcony section, swaying to the soft rhythm. If the only memory music lovers were to take home was this one song, it would still be completely worth it.

A few more tunes into the second half of the show, and without warning, the tempo was set higher. Faster beats, swiveling lights and KK all of a sudden upping his stage antics to energetic jumps. But at 10pm, perhaps the band had waited a little too long to get the party started. Still, there was loud appreciation on the first line of Khuda Jaane (Bachna Ae Haseeno) and fans did in fact ‘Make Some Noise’ for the Desi Boys. On a high now, the night came to an end with an upbeat Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe (Dil Chahta Hai). Close to hundred kids went on stage to dance and squeal along. The concert stretched out longer than expected, sadly the party ended only too soon.
