HYDERABAD: From research lab to the bedside of patients, farms and homes - science can bring progress when it can reach out to people, said Prof D Balasubramanian, director of research, LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).He was delivering the Dr. Y. Nayudamma memorial lecture at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Somajiguda, in Hyderabad on Friday.The professor traced the journey of science post-independence and how it had built India as it is today. He recalled the service of Dr. Nayudamma and other committed scientists like him to the society.“In 1950s, the biggest challenge was to eradicate smallpox and it took years of immunisation initiatives by nearly 300 million people to check the menace. The current recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering which grew into prominence after 1995 has changed the concept of medicine from curative to preventive type,” said D Balasubramanian. He also spoke of achievements of LVPEI which is in its silver jubilee year.
