Jerusalem: Doctors postponed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's scheduled surgery on Tuesday because of a respiratory infection, a Hadassah Hospital spokesman said.

Sharon, 77, has been in a coma since suffering a massive stroke on January 4. He had a feeding tube inserted in his stomach on February 1.

Sharon has undergone seven surgeries including three on the brain after his massive brain hemorrhage.

Doctors removed part of his colon that had become necrotic and replaced breathing and feeding tubes. In the most recent procedure, doctors drained fluid from his abdominal cavity.

Prof Shlomo Mor-Yosef, the Director of Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital, where Sharon is being hospitalised has said in the past that the Prime Minister will be taken to a rehabilitation center after the elections.
