Shocked Jaya supporters commit suicide
Unable to bear AIADMK's defeat in Assembly polls, four party workers died of shock while two committed suicide.

Chennai: Unable to bear the defeat of All India Dravida Munnettra Kazgham (AIADMK) in the recently-concluded Assembly elections, four party workers died of shock while two committed suicide.

Party functionary C Balamurugan, 43, of Kovilpatti, Kalimuthu, 50, of Coimbatore District, Munusamy, 37, of Coimbatore AIADMK and Kannammal, 53, a woman functionary in Dharmapuri District died of heart attack.

Vasanthi, a food shop owner in Vyasarpadi area and a staunch supporter of party supremo Jayalalithaa, committed suicide.

The 43-old-woman broke into tears and did not interact even with her family. Despite their best attempts to console her, she poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. She succumbed to burns in the hospital.

In her handwritten suicide note addressed to Jayalalithaa, she asked her not to lose heart.

"We know pretty well what you are feeling about the party's defeat, and I cannot tolerate it. I am able to give only my life to you," Vasanthi wrote in her suicide note.

In a note to her husband Gopal, secretary of the local MGR Mandram, she said she was unable to see the "sorrowful face of Jayalalithaa".

In a similar incident, 39-year-old party office-bearer Gemini Ganesan allegedly killed himself by ingesting poison at Telugumatrapallli village in Vellore District on Friday.
