New Delhi: An organisation representing Kashmiri pandits on Tuesday condemned the plea made by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking amnesty for Mohd Afzal Guru and demanded that no mercy be shown to the Parliament attack convict.
Kashmiri Samiti said it viewed with great concern the plea made by Azad. "It is strange that Shri Azad should seek amnesty for a confirmed convict who had been provided free and fair trial in three stages under the law of the land," it said in a release.
"The KDS demands that no mercy should be shown to Afzal Guru," the Samiti said.
Terming the case to be a "litmus test" for the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, KDS demanded that the party should come clear with its stand on the matter. "... it is a litmus test for the Central Government to prove its bonafides of providing no room to terrorism," it said.
"We hope and believe that the religion to which Afzal Guru belongs has nothing to do with it," the Samiti said, adding the Kashmiri pandits in particular and Indians in general consider it as an act of "national betrayal designed to subvert the highly commendable Indian system of justice."
