New Delhi: After locals alleged that a child died in the anti-encroachment drive by the Railways, the initial probe suggests that the child died due to smothering when a sack of clothes fell on her as people were being moved out of the slum.
The slum dwellers including women and children were seen out in the open trying to collect their belongings. While some erected makeshift tents to protect themselves from the cold, others made temporary arrangements for cooking.
Railways on Saturday removed about 1200 slum dwellings and about 15 shops at Shakurbasti station after giving third notice to vacate before December 12, 2015.
Meanwhile, the Aam Admi party has hit out against the Centre for evicting people without rehabilitating them adding that the incident shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Smart Cities' initiative in a poor light.
The Railways has also come out with a clarification and has said that they decided to go ahead with the demolitions only after several notices went unheeded. They have said that several notices were issued as the Railways needed land there for the construction of a new passenger terminal.
Railways will apprise Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal about the development at Shakurbasti. "We will be meeting the Delhi Chief Miniter Arvind Kejriwal to apprise him of the actual facts. We will tell him that we have carried out the drive after giving them enough time to vacate," Delhi Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Arun Arora said.
