MANANTHAVADI: Known as the ‘Kashi of the South’, the Maha Vishnu Temple, Thirunelli, about 40 km from here, is known for its rituals (bali) performed to propitiate the souls of ancestors during the day of ‘Karkidaka Vavu’. From time immemorial, thousands of pilgrims regularly perform ‘bali’, paying obeisance to the departed souls on the banks of the sacred stream Papanashini every year. Last year, about 25,000 people performed ‘bali’ at Thirunelli, according to temple authorities. “This year, we have made special arrangements to ensure the comfort for devotees,” said Adv P Chathukutti, chairman, Malabar Devaswom Board. Talking to ‘Express’, he said that the guest house of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) will be opened for devotees on July 29, a day ahead of the Vavubali. Free breakfast also would be arranged for them on July 30. On the travel facilities, Adv Chathukkutti said that taxi and private vehicles of the pilgrims would be blocked at Kattikulam from Saturday (July 29) evening to avoid traffic snarls. KSRTC buses would conduct special trips to the temple.
