THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While the City Corporation’s pre-monsoon cleaning is nearing completion in most wards, it is to take off in a special way in Vizhinjam and adjacent five wards on Monday. The Corporation has decided to launch a special cleaning drive in the coastal wards in view of the start of monsoon tourism here. Better late than never seems to be the inspiration. Though the ward councillors here would agree that monsoon tourism has few takers these days, as Kovalam does not figure among the hottest destinations in the country anymore, the Corporation still thinks it could at least keep the place ready for tourists. The pre-monsoon cleanup would be extended to awareness campaigns and medical camps in the five wards, including Mulloor, Venganoor, Kottapuram and Harbour."Since they are coastal wards, they pose the extra threat of epidemics. That is why we have decided to give special attention to those places. We know, the rains have already begun, but before it leads to diseases, we would complete our campaign there,’’ said S Pushpalatha, Health Standing Committee Chairperson. She said that a meeting in this regard in the presence of the councillors from the five wards was called and their support ensured. The detailed schedule would be prepared by Monday and the councillors would take up the mantle themselves to organise the cleanup in their respective places without flaws, she said. As of now, the schedule has given space to awareness campaigns among the local people as to cleaning their surroundings. They would be given tips on disposal of garbage and classes on the need to keep the premises clean. Medical camps will be held with the support of Public Health Centres in the area. The drains and culverts in the area would be cleaned and canals and open spaces would be cleaned up. Before becoming part of the Corporation, these wards have been employing their own methods like burying the garbage in deep pits, burning it and so on. But now, following the demand of the ward councillors, the Corporation has been sending JCBs to remove the garbage and is also planning to set up biogas plants there along with the other wards. According to officials, the garbage cannot be transported to Vilappilsala as the situation there is not favourable, but now that the Corporation has grown bigger with 100 wards, new garbage disposal methods have become imperative.
