PUDUCHERRY: The life style of the current generation is affecting kids in a big way and more and more children are developing bow legs, knock knees, curved spines, said Dr Sankar, consultant orthopaedic & spine surgeon, Apollo Children’s Hospital, Chennai.Speaking to Express recently, he said this was taking place due to deficiency of Vitamin D3 and lack of adequate physical activity. This leads to poor calcium absorption and weak bones. In the past such diseases were prevalent among rural and undernourished children. But now it is common in urban areas, he said. Sankar said that he encountered at least four such cases a week and generally the children were aged between two and five years. The problem could be much more serious as there was no epidemiological data available to understand this dangerous and emerging trend. Both parents working, nuclear families and infants remaining in the hands of hired help basically or being restricted to a limited area led to such problems. Such ailments could be avoided by exposing the children to sunlight. Other incidences of deformities at birth such as club feet and dislocated hips and abnormalities have also been on the rise.Dr Kamala, consultant paediatric neurology, observed that in older children there were more and more cases of attention disorders due to excess usage of TVs, computers for longer periods.
