SRM Professor elected to WPA

CHENNAI: M Thirunavukarasu, Professor and Head of the Psychiatric Department at SRM University, has brought accolades to the country by winning with a thumping majority in the Zonal Representative election at the World Congress of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) at Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September. The WPA is a global association of national psychiatric societies aimed at increasing knowledge and skills necessary in the field of mental health and in care for the mentally ill. Its 135 member societies are spread across 117 different countries, representing more than 200,000 psychiatrists.Thirunavukarasu willnow be representing Zone 16 of the WPA which consists of 10 countries namely, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand and in charge of the policies of Mental Health programmes and promotion. The work includes improvement of Global Mental Health. Thirunavukarasu hails from Salem and also served as a professor at the Madras Medical College. He has also served in the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in the capacity of Member of Senate and Governing Council. He has written many books of which one was awarded the Best Book of the Year by the Tamil Nadu Government.
