A girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and 13 others sexually abused at a fake NCC camp in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri. The organiser of the camp and the school principal are among 11 arrested, police said on Monday (August 19).
According to police, also among those arrested are two teachers and a correspondent. The private school did not possess a unit of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and the organisers told the management that hosting such a camp will help them qualify, police said.
NCC Issues Statement
The NCC issued a statement clarifying that the people involved in the incident have no connection with the National Cadet Corps.
“On August 19, an incident of alleged sexual harassment of school girls attending a fake NCC camp by fake NCC persons in Bargur, Krishnagiri district Tamil Nadu was reported in the media. The reported incident does not pertain to any of the institutions registered/enrolled with the NCC. The personnel involved in the alleged incident have no connection with NCC. Also, no NCC camp was conducted in Krishnagiri District. This News is an unequivocal misinformation and obscuration of facts with a potential to be misconstrued as involvement of NCC personnel,” the statement said.
This comes amid nationwide outrage and protests against the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
According to reports, police said the school failed to conduct background checks on the group it engaged for the so-called camp. A total of 41 students, including 17 girls, took part in the three-day camp held earlier this month, they said.
Police further said the girls alleged that they were lured out of an auditorium, where they had been housed, and sexually abused. There were no teachers to supervise the camp, they added.
The girls have undergone medical examination while the district child welfare committee has also initiated action. “The school authorities were aware of the sexual offences but chose to suppress the matter instead of informing the police. The students were allegedly instructed not to take it seriously,” district superintendent of police P Thangadurai told NDTV.
Police are probing if a racket is behind this case, one which operates such fake camps and if any have been organised in other schools. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
