Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police on Wednesday made the third arrest in the gruesome murder of a 24-year-old woman employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The accused was arrested from West Bengal and is being brought back to Chennai by train.
The arrest came just a day after two migrant workers from Bengal were held in Chennai over the death of the woman. The two have reportedly confessed to sexual assault. A statement issued by the police said the two had robbed the woman of her mobile phone and credit card before murdering her. The two will be produced in court on Wednesday.
The victim's body was found just half-a-kilometre away from her office in the SIPCOT IT park in Chennai, nine days after she went missing. According to CCTV footage, the woman left her office on the fateful day half-an-hour earlier.
The police suspected sexual assault, but failed to act up. Kelambakkam police station inspector Subbaiah was charged with dereliction of duty and suspended for failing to file a missing persons complaint and not providing adequate security within the IT park.
The murder came a month after another TCS employee was found dead on the outskirts of Mumbai. Esther Anuhya, a software engineer from Andhra Pradesh, went missing from Mumbai on January 5. Her body was found in a highly decomposed state 11 days later in suburban Kanjurmarg.
The Mumbai Police is yet to make any arrests in the case. It detained a few auto-rickshaw drivers for questioning but let them go for lack of evidence.
