Here are some facts behind the protests:
- 1358: the number of suicides by farmers in Telangana in 2015.
- Out of the 1699 suicides due to poverty in India in 2014, 839 (49%) victims were from Telangana.
- Telangana saw 26.5 suicide per lakh population in 2014
- At least 17,061 police posts are vacant in the state, against a sanctioned strength of 64,489, a 26.46% deficit.
- Telangana is under a huge debt burden of Rs 1.23 lakh crore, according to the budget estimates presented by the state finance minister Etala Rajender.
