New Delhi:The key accused in the fake stamp-paper scam, Abdul Karim Telgi along with other accused, has gone on a mass hunger strike, at the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune.

Protesting the transfer of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Judge Chitra K Bhedi, the hunger strike continues into its second day.

The Central Jail Superintendent Rajendra Dhamne informed PTI that out of the 53 fake stamp case accused, only 45 were on the hunger fast.

All attempts made by jail authorities and lawyers to persuade the inmates to call of the strike, have failed.

Forty-five accused informed the MCOCA that they had sent telegrams and letters requesting the High Court to cancel the transfer of Judge Bhedi to Mumbai. The deadline they had set expired on 29 May following which they resorted to the hunger strike.

"I have received letters from 45 accused saying that they were on a hunger strike. The remaining claimed that their signatures on the letter given yesterday were taken under pressure. Barring the 45, others have had their food," Dhamne said.

Though on Bhedi request , Telgi's lawyer Milind Pawar, was sent to the prison to convince him to call off the strike, but all efforts were in vain.
