THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Water Resources Minister P J Joseph has said that tenders have been invited for projects worth Rs. 68 crore related to the Kuttanad package. He told a news conference here on Wednesday that works related to the Kuttanad package would be implemented in a time-bound manner. Technical sanction would be accorded to projects worth Rs. 379 crore. The priority would be given to works related to construction of bunds and protective walls. Joseph said that Rs. 248 crore would be spent for the renovation of the drainage system in Onattukara. Instructions have been issued to monitor the construction works of Kottayam and Alappuzha districts.The proposed carrier bridge-cum-regulator in Upper Kuttanad will benefit puncha paddy cultivation in 2200 hectares, he said. Under the 100-days action programme of the government, 25 potable water projects have been completed in the Kasargod, Idukki, Malappuram and Thiruvanathapuram districts.The Kannur potable water project being implemented at a cost of `67 crore under the KWA will be inaugurated on October 1. The Pattuvam and Cherthala potable water projects being implemented as part of the Japan Potable Water Project will be commissioned in December. The main pipeline bringing drinking water from Aruvikkara to Thiruvananthapuram city will be replaced by spending Rs. 50 crore. For the implementation of the project a high-level meeting of officers will be convened soon, the minister said. The KWA managing director had been asked to prepare a project report for replacing the old pipelines with new ones to make water distribution smooth. The height of Peppara dam will be increased by six metres to expedite the the water supply in the Thiruvananthapuram city, the minister said. The Union Environment Ministry had given in principle approval for the project.
