KOZHIKODE: The scripts of Thachambalathu Damodaran, who passed away on Wednesday, were often socio-political dramas comprising serious politics and trade unionism but brilliantly weaved with family relations and emotions. The Damodaran-I V Sasi combination produced several hits including ‘Angadi’, ‘Eee Nadu’, ‘Vaartha’, ‘Avanazhi’, ‘1921’, ‘Adimakal Udamakal’ and ‘Inspector Balram’. With director Priyadarshan, Damodaran scripted films like ‘Aryan’, ‘Abhimanyu’, ‘Advaitham’, ‘Kalapani’ and ‘Megham’.The last film he wrote script for was ‘Yes Your Owner’ directed by V M Vinu in 2006. Popularly known as Damodaran Master, Damodaran started his career as a physical education teacher at Government High School, Beypore. During 1960s, Damodaran was active in theatre along with noted film and theatre artistes including Kuthiravattom Pappu, Hariharan, Kunjandi, Thikkodiyan and Mamukoya.It was director Hariharan who inspired Damodaran to write for screen after seeing his powerful dramas dealing with social issues. His first screenplay was for the film ‘Love Marriage’ directed by Hariharan in 1975. However, Damodaran established himself in the industry with his script for the film ‘Angadi’in 1980 with actors Jayan and Seema in the lead roles. He scripted 80 films in a career spanning nearly four decades.Inspired by his proficiency in penning political dramas, renowned film maker Mani Ratnam chose Damodaran to write his first and only film in Malayalam, ‘Unaru’ starring Mohanlal, Ratheesh and Sukumaran in the year 1984. He tried his acting skills in a few movies including ‘Olavum Theeravum’, ’Kilichundan Mambazham’ and ‘Paleri Manikyam’.Damodaran was also known for his passion for football and worked as a football commentator and referee as well. He was also instrumental in forming a football academy in Beypore and was active with its promotion activities till his last days.Damodaran is survived by daughters - Deedi, Simna and Rashmi and sons-in-law Premchand, Rajeev Laxman and Mohankumar.His wife Pushpa died on March 4, 2011. The end came at around 10 am on Wednesday at his daughter Simna’s residence in Kozhikode. The mortal remains of Damodaran were brought to his residence near Meenchantha late on Wednesday.The body will be kept at the Town Hall in Kozhikode from 8 am on Thursday for the public to pay the last repsects and will be cremated later at the Mavoor Road crematorium at 11 am.
