I cant believe that India, a nation of more than a billion people keeps returning with just one medal from the last three editions of the Olympics. And the fact that no one is doing anything regarding this really hurts me.
Nations like Jamaica, Kenya, Ethiopia finish ahead of us in the medals tally. India really does not have a second sport. Only Cricket is followed passionately, but even the national Cricket Team is on the decline. India is going to host the commonwealth games in 2010, even if Delhi manages to get everything ready in time, It would be a big embarrassment if the host nation fails to do well.
The problem is that parents do not allow their children to participate actively in sports at a younger age, and only encourage the traditional subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Sports Authorities are also responsible. BCCI is one of the richest sports bodies yet the state of the cricket stadiums is one of the worst in the world.
Look, what is the state of Hockey right now, hope that does not happen to cricket. Millions of us watch football well after midnight, yet we are not able to qualify for the World Cup, and nations like Angola, Trinidad & Tobago, Ghana are able to. It hurts to see my nation fail at these big events, hopefully the state of sports improves in India after the Commonwealth Games.
