New Delhi: Thousands of people are marching from Vrindavan to Delhi demanding a cleaner Yamuna. The purpose of the 10-day long march to Delhi Yamuna Rakshak Dal is to demand release of more water from Hathini Kund barrage and to keep the Yamuna clean and not to discharge pollutants into it.
The protesters reached the UP-Haryana border on the fourth day of their march on Monday and blocked the highway and Delhi Agra railway track, disrupting traffic. They also stoned some trains on the route but the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. After reaching Delhi the protesters plan to protest outside Parliament against the Centre's inaction on keeping Yamuna clean.
The activists are expected to reach Delhi on March 10 and include saints, social activists, religious groups and Bharatiya Kisan Union workers. They are demanding that the Centre must take strict action to keep Yamuna clean and ensure that at least 50 per cent of the water at Hathini Kund barrage is released into the river and discharge of pollutants into the water body is immediately stopped.
