New Delhi: Police investigators probing the Gorakhpur blasts revealed on Wednesday that timer devices may have been used to detonate the three low-intensity bombs in a crowded shopping area of the temple town on Tuesday evening.
The revelation has sent shock waves through the entire security set-up in the state and the police have been put on high alert in all key towns and cities. Additional forces have been deployed in all the districts of the state.
A Special Task Force team from Lucknow has been rushed to Gorakhpur for further investigation into the blasts.
"The bombs were kept in tiffin boxes and tied to cycles. They went off at five minutes interval of each other after 7 pm near Baldev Plaza, Ganesh Crossing and Jalkal Building in the busy Golghar area," RK Rai, Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur told PTI on Wednesday.
He confirmed that timer devices were used to set off the three blasts. Security has been beefed up in all the sensitive areas of the city. All exit points from the city has been sealed. The blasts in Gorakhpur hold significance as the city had witnessed communal violence recently.
Security around the famous Gorakhnath temple, which has been on the hit list of terrorists, has also been tightened. Police are also investigating whether the blasts have any link with the recovery of 10 kg of explosives and 20 litres of ammonium nitrate from Faizabad railway station in the wee hours on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, five persons, who were injured in the blasts, are now out of danger and being treated at the district hospital in Gorakhpur. The injured have been identified as Rajesh Kumar (32), Santosh Singh (35), Sanjay Rai (35), Ganesh (41) and Rameshwar Patel (30).
